To celebrate the publication of Kristen Hoerl's new book, The Impossible Woman, the Department of Communication Studies will hold a launch party at Francie and Finch Bookshop on Feb. 10 at 3:30 p.m.
The book was published by Rutgers University Press on November 11 and is available in multiple formats.
From the publisher's description: "Although it may seem like the proliferation of strong women on television is a feminist achievement, a deeper look into their stories tells us otherwise. The Impossible Woman examines a variety of scripted US television series across multiple genres to show how the cultural value of television’s extraordinarily talented female characters often rests upon their ability to endure—but not overcome—sexism."
Hoerl is an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies. She studies how popular film and television contribute to public knowledge about social activism responding to white supremacy, patriarchy, and neoliberalism. Her last book, The Bad Sixties, won the 2018 Best Book award from the American Studies Division of the National Communication Association.
